This Mother’s Day, we’re thrilled to collaborate again with our friends at J.Crew. While in Los Angeles for our book tour, we made a stopover in the bohemian surf mecca of Venice Beach to spend the afternoon with this spirited, laid-back trio.

From the moment you step into Hannah Henderson’s light-filled Venice beach house, time suddenly stands still. The open-air space is a study in tranquility, and opposites–modern glass walls and hard edges are juxtaposed with sumptuous textiles, weathered wood, and deeply personal pieces of art (our favorite is a pair of paintings by Katsuo Design over the stairwell that say “Inspire” and “Deep down”, which serve as a subtle reminder to let the imagination take over every once in a while). That hard-to-come-by mix of timelessness with just the right amount of effortless cool is exactly what’s made General Store, which Henderson opened with her longtime love John Moore back in 2012, such an instant success. As a mom, Henderson lives, and parents, by two simple and powerful rules: be consistent and lead by example. The result, two kind, warm-hearted, and charming little ones, much like their mama.
